Environment Committee Explores Topics of Fracking, Cost-Saving Solutions

Women Mayors Address Issues of Working Women, Women’s History

The Women Mayors met during the 80th Winter Meeting and heard from the Director of the Women’s Bureau at  the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Sara Manzano-Diaz and National Women’s History Museum President Joan Wages. Miramar Mayor Lori Moseley, Chair of the Caucus, opened the meeting and said how glad she was to see so many women mayors in attendance.

Second Annual CityStats Survey
Next month the Florida League of Cities will be conducting the second annual CityStats Survey. The survey will be sent to every municipality in Florida to collect information on municipal operations, budgets, and city services. All of the data and information collected from the survey is housed in the Research Library on the Florida League of Cities website (http://www.floridaleagueofcities.com/). You can currently check out your 2011 CityStats results and profile online. The League is excited to begin the second annual survey and begin researching trends and patterns in Florida municipalities. The CityStats Survey is a great tool to learn about similar cities and compare different governmental operations and services. Please help the League meet 100% participation in the 2012 CityStats Survey by encouraging your municipality to complete the survey this March. MORE>
The Mayors Mean Business Summit to be held February 22-23, 2012 in Tallahassee
The Mayors Mean Business Summit is an initiative sponsored by the Florida League of Mayors designed to highlight the important role of cities in economic development and jobs creation. It's a collaborative effort between mayors and business leaders from their communities to promote the importance of business growth at the local level. Mayors from throughout Florida, along with a local business leader, will visit the state Capitol delivering this message. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis will receive the 2012 Public Leadership in the Arts Awards
Pembroke Pines, FL…. January 25, 2012…. The Americans for the Arts, America’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education, and The United States Conference of Mayors announced that Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis will receive the 2012 Public Leadership in the Arts Awards. Recognized along with Mayor Ortis, was Illinois Governor Pat Quinn; Burnsville, MN Mayor Elizabeth Kautz.  “Governor Quinn and Mayors Kautz and Ortis have each demonstrated their dedication to thoughtfully using the arts to spur economic development while enhancing the quality of life in the communities they serve,” stated Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts.

FLC Legislative Text Alerts
To help city officials stay better informed on important legislative calls to action during session, the Florida League of Cities has implemented a legislative text alert program.
This texting program will alert FLC members (who sign up) on important legislative alerts during session. Participants would receive no more than 1-3 text alerts per week, at the most.
To sign up, click here for the Legislative Text Alerts. The website will ask for your first / last name and phone number. Once your check the box accepting the terms and conditions and privacy policy, then click on the submit button. This will send a test message to your phone that you will have to reply “OK” and send back to start receiving Legislative Text Alerts. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Busick.

Florida League of Cities Institute for Civic Leadership
Terms limits have changed the face of Florida politics.

 
The Florida League of Cities will sponsor its 2012 “Institute for Civic Leadership—with a series of workshops designed to train prospective legislative candidates on how to be better, more successful candidates when you decide to run for the Legislature. This session is designed to help attendees with the following: getting their campaign up and running, using social media to get the message out, interviewing campaign managers and most importantly, fundraising.

National League of Cities Congressional City Conference
The National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference will be held March 10-14 in Washington, D.C. As the 2012 campaign season gets under way, join your fellow city leaders and call on Congress and the administration to support economic recovery and job-creation efforts in communities through federal investment in infrastructure and human capital that establish the building blocks necessary for greater long-term growth. News from the Town of Palm Shores
The Town continues work on our Shoreside Park expansion along the scenic Indian River Lagoon. The expansion will include a new Pavilion, additional picnic tables, grills and activities for both the young and young at heart. In keeping with our theme "The Little Town that Cares", the Town has planned a Fundraiser on February 25, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Our 6th annual Fundraiser and Baby shower for the Florida Wildlife Hospital will be held on May 19. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Town Hall at 321-242-4555. MORE>
