The Honorable Tim Murry
Mayor, City of Clermont
Tim Murry is a native Clermont resident and the fifth of 12 children. He attended Lincoln Park School and graduated from Clermont High School in 1972. As a young Black man growing up in the South, Tim dealt with the good and the bad and learned from both. One night, under a streetlight shortly before he moved away for college, Tim and several friends made a pact they would return to Clermont one day and give back to their community.
In 1975, Tim joined the United States Air Force and was assigned numerous management and leadership duties, many which presented first-time challenges and fostered growth and development.
During the Gulf War, Tim accepted the leadership of a 24/7 operation responsible for the morale, welfare, and recreation of 1,200 troops assigned to the war zone in Doha, Qatar. He received an achievement award for the success of this program.
He continued to serve his country with honor and distinction for more than 22 years, retiring in 1998. He then started a second 21-year career with the United States Postal Service when he worked in Growth and Address Management.
In 2001, he moved back to his old neighborhood, purchased a home, and began fulfilling that childhood promise to help make a difference in his community. He was first appointed to the Clermont Planning and Zoning Commission and later to the Code Enforcement Board.
When he saw a need for the local youth, Mayor Murry initiated the process to open a Boys and Girls Club in Clermont and has served on the advisory board for the Lake and Sumter Counties Boys and Girls Club Corporate Board. He also helped establish the Lincoln Park Alliance and continues to serve on its board.
In 2020, Tim was elected as Clermont’s first Black Mayor and was re-elected to his third term in 2024.
He is President of the Lake League of Cities and a member of the Florida League of Mayors. He also serves on the board of directors for Apopka Natural Gas and the South Lake Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He served six years as the President of the South Lake Democratic Club and is a member of the Lake County Black Caucus, the South Lake Black Achievers, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mayor Murry remains dedicated to his church and serves as the Vice Chair of New Jacob’s Chapel Board of Trustees and President of the Christian Men in Action Community Development Corporation.
He strongly believes you should never stop learning and solidifies that belief with his five degrees -two Associate of Arts, a Bachelor of Science in Management/Human Resources, and a Master of Business Administration.
Mayor Murry received the 2024 Public Service Award from Lake County and was awarded numerous military commendations, including Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year, Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter, and Athletic Director of the Year for Tactical Air Command.
He is married to Ocala native Kassier Kyler-Murry, who he says is his strongest supporter, and is the proud father of three and the grandfather to one little boy.
